Sunday May 6, 2012 is the first official MMBTS Trail Day of the year.
It will be an exciting day as we are breaking ground on a new trail, Family Guy. This is will be the first Easy trail on the West side of the Moose Mountain road.
The trail day will start meeting at the Ing’s Mine Parking lot at 10:30 am. Be there on time to take part in the draw for some prizes courtesy of Calgary Cycle. We will then grab some MMBTS tools, break into groups and drive up the Moose Mountain road to the work area. MMBTS has a work permit and a key for the gate for this event. Calgary Cycle will also be rewarding hungry volunteers at the end of the day with a BBQ.
If you haven’t been to a trail day before, no worries, we have the tools and learning to build trails is easy. Bring work gloves, sturdy footwear, snacks and lots of water, especially if the forecast is warm. MMBTS has a good selection of tools for your use. The primary trail building tool is a 5 lb clay pick or mattock. If you happen to have your own certainly bring it along.
This won’t be the first ground breaking on Family Guy. Two years ago on April 25, 2010 the work started with the first trail scouting. Then came more scouting, GPS track recording, mapping, taking pictures and writing a proposal. Then came another idea and another proposal. Then a 5 year plan with more trail ideas. This was ground breaking too, as Sustainable Resource Development (SRD) and Tourism Parks and Recreation (TPR) had never approved a trail proposal before. SRD and TPR had to establish a process to review and approve a recreational trail proposal. An approval process framework was designed around the Family Guy proposal (then simply known at “West Side Easy”). Just prior to the MMBTS 2011 AGM, the trail approvals were received for SHAFT and Family Guy. MMBTS received a $15,000 grant from MEC and used this for the construction of SHAFT during 2011.
Last fall, the first ground breaking of actual dirt and rock took place and the first segment of Family Guy was built. On the first MMBTS trail day of 2012 we will be breaking ground on Segment 2 from Toothless to Billy Dog. If we have a big energetic crew turn out, we could well be breaking ground on segment 3 by the next trail day.
